Marine Park Otupaiia, Waitara

A visionary initiative to ensure that Marine Park Otupaiia remains a place of joy and wellbeing for the Waitara community and visitors alike. Developed in partnership with Te Kōwhatu Tū Moana Trust, New Plymouth District Council and NP Partners.

For generations of Waitara residents, both before and after the Europeans’ arrival, Marine Park Otupaiia — where the river meets the offshore reefs — has been a place to gather, socialise, swim, surf, fish and share kai.

Te Kōwhatu Tū Moana Trust (representing Manukorihi and Otaraua hapū) and the New Plymouth District Council are co-ordinating a plan to turn this much-loved heritage meeting place and ocean playground into a contemporary celebration of our shared history, heritage and culture.

Stages 1 and 2 of the project are now complete, delivering the Te Pai o Te Rangi walkway connection, skate park, upgraded car park, picnic shelters, outdoor dining areas with BBQs, artworks and a fish preparation station. Work on Stage 3 is already underway and will continue through summer, with completion expected in April 2026. This next stage will create an enhanced play space involving nature and water, along with a youth zone featuring a pump track, basketball and volleyball courts, and new pathways with seating areas.
