Ngāmotu Marae

Ngāti Te Whiti are the tangata whenua of Ngāmotu-New Plymouth. Yet for over 150 years, New Plymouth and Ngāti Te Whiti have not had a central marae. Now with the support of Boon and NP Partners plus a group of foundation build partners, planning permission has been granted for the construction of an impressive new marae on a site overlooking the ocean at 1 Bayly Road.

A new home for Ngāti Te Whiti: taking our past into our future.

Designed by Boon, the new Ngāmotu Marae will welcome visitors with pride, and be a gathering place that nurtures and supports both Ngāti Te Whiti and all who call our city and district home. The new marae will comprise a wharenui with the capacity to sleep 80 people, a wharekai that can cater a meal for 100, and a community meeting space and administration centre with all necessary technology and amenities.

As well as educating people of all ages about of city’s history and cultural heritage, Ngāmotu Marae will add a major central resource for conferences, public meetings and cultural and sporting occasions. It will also be a Civil Defence safe haven in times of need. Construction of the building will commence in July 2025.

Core project partners are Ngāti Te Whiti, New Plymouth District Council and Toi Foundation. Find out more
