New Plymouth’s multi-million dollar all ages play area Destination Kāwaroa is now fully funded with the final two stages of the area expected to be completed by the middle of the year.

One of the largest playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere at close to 22,000 m2, the $7 million facility included fountains, slides, swings, a sensory area and social spaces for people of all ages and abilities.

Stage One was officially opened just before Christmas and was a big hit over the summer, with around 2000 people visiting each day during the peak holiday period.

Now the final $1m had been raised and construction of Stage Twowas set to begin in May. It was scheduled to open two months later.

This phase brings a “lot more play’, Taranaki Foundation chief executive Josh Hickford said. There would be a trampoline, carousel and two towers built in the currently empty space next to the water features.
